Baby Shower Event Photography | Elcot Park, Newbury

A baby showerCelebration and the Gift that outlasts it!

Some of the best maternity photographs I've taken weren't booked as a exclusive maternity shoots.

Jaswinder's family and friends gathered at Elcot Park in Newbury to celebrate her pregnancy. It was a party, a celebration, not a photoshoot. But Elcot Part provided stunning background and soft window light perfect for photos, so between the toasts and the catching up, I stole Jaswinder away for a few minutes at a time and made a set of maternity portraits.

When I sent her the gallery, her first reaction was, "Oh, Pranali, the pictures look kind of magical." I'll take that.

Guests' privacy mattered, so I'm only sharing Jaswinder's portraits here. They show what you can get from a family celebration if you build in a little time for photographs: a keepsake of this chapter that you'd never have thought to book separately.

Is a maternity photoshoot a good baby shower gift?

Jaswinder's sister-in-law arranged the photography as a gift, and it's one of my favourite things about this celebration. I'm fairly sure Jaswinder will think of her every time she opens these pictures.

Most people buy for the baby at a baby shower, and those gifts are always appreciated. Photographs do a different job. Pregnancy can feel endless while you're in it, then your little one arrives and the whole stretch blurs into a few weeks you can barely place. Portraits taken during that time hold on to it, and they become more precious the older they get.

They also show something a shop-bought gift can't. Jaswinder will see how she looked, but she'll also see the people around her that afternoon, and remember how loved and supported she felt before her baby arrived.

That's why I'd put a photography on the gift list. A pram gets outgrown. A portrait doesn't.

Should you book a separate maternity session?

A baby shower already has what good photographs need: excitement, anticipation, family close by and real emotion. At Jaswinder's, I worked a few portrait moments into the day itself. Nobody was pulled away from the party for too long, and nothing felt staged, because the day stayed about enjoying it and spending it with the guests.

If you'd like portrait experience for just the two of you before life changes, a dedicated maternity session is the better choice. You get time together with no guests and no schedule to work around.

Does the venue matter for baby shower photographs? Elcot Park, Newbury

Here's the truth: the venue isn't the most important part. The people, the relationships, and the reason for gathering will always come first. However, the right location can have a significant impact on how your photographs look and feel. It doesn't have to be extravagant, but it should reflect the kind of experience you want to create for yourself and your guests.

Elcot Park in Newbury gave me elegant Victorian-style interiors, architectural detail and plenty of natural light, which is what made the portraits feel timeless and refined. We never had to leave the celebration. The grounds and the trees gave us shade for group photos. I've shared a short Instagram reel showcasing the venue's character, if you'd like to see it.

If you're planning a baby shower, a family or corporate celebration or any private event, think about how the venue will photograph and how it will work on the day. Where will people gather? Where is the light good? Is there somewhere quiet for a few portraits?
