There is something magical about photographing a baby in their first spring. The world is fresh, the colours are soft, and a baby who is just discovering everything around them; flowers, textures, the breeze on their face is the most natural subject you could ever point a camera at. This is exactly what I experienced photographing baby Ava and her family at Harris Garden at the University of Reading on a breezy spring morning. Why 7 Months Is One of the Best Ages for a Baby Photoshoot
Parents often ask me when the best time is to book their baby's first outdoor photoshoot. My honest answer? The window between 6 and 9 months is genuinely one of the most rewarding ages to photograph.
Here is why. At 7 months, babies are sitting up independently (or very nearly), which opens up so many more natural and relaxed poses compared to a newborn session. They are alert, curious, and visually expressive. Ava, for example, was completely captivated by every flower she could reach, and that pure curiosity translated into some of the most genuine expressions of the whole session.
At the same time, babies at this age are not yet walking or running off. They are still very content to be held, cuddled, and carried by their parents, which means I get that beautiful mix of solo baby shots and warm family portraits in the same session without spending half the time chasing a toddler across a field.
The developmental milestone of sitting + babies at this age interact with their environment in a way that feels organic on camera. No prompting needed. Just place them near some spring blossoms and let the magic happen.
Why Spring Is the Perfect Season for an Outdoor Family Photoshoot
Spring in Reading can be unpredictable, but it is genuinely my favourite season to photograph families outdoors and not just because of the flowers, though those help enormously.
The light is exceptional. During spring, the sun sits at a lower angle in the sky compared to summer, which means even midday light is soft, diffused, and flattering. In summer, I schedule outdoor sessions exclusively in the early morning or late evening to avoid the harsh overhead light that creates unflattering shadows. In spring, I have far more flexibility, which makes it much easier to work around family schedules and nap routines — a very real consideration when there is a baby involved.
The natural backdrops are extraordinary. Bluebells, daffodils, cherry blossom, tulips, and fresh green growth all arrive within weeks of each other in spring. Instead of bringing props or elaborate setups, I let the landscape do the work. The result is a timeless, natural feel that ages beautifully. You will look back at these photos in twenty years and they will still feel elegant.
Golden hour works around your children's bedtime. In the UK, summer sunsets can fall as late as 9 or 10pm — meaning golden hour arrives well past most young children's bedtimes. In spring and early summer, golden hour comes much earlier in the evening, giving you that beautiful warm end-of-day light without disrupting a single bedtime routine.
Temperatures are comfortable. Not too hot, not too cold — young children can be dressed in layers that look lovely on camera, and parents are comfortable moving around without overheating or shivering.
Harris Garden, University of Reading, A Beautiful Location for a Family Photoshoot
Tucked within the Whiteknights Campus, Harris Garden is one of Reading's most beautiful and underrated spots for an outdoor family photoshoot. In spring it is absolutely stunning. Seasonal flowers, mature trees, open lawns, and dappled light all within a short walk of each other. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried, with no road noise or sudden interruptions, which makes a real difference when you are photographing young children. For Ava's session, we made full use of the spring colour and the moment she discovered the flowers near the ground, the camera practically did the work itself.
What to Expect From a Spring Outdoor Photoshoot With a Baby at This Age
I know that bringing a 7-month-old to an outdoor photoshoot can feel a little nerve-wracking if you have not done one before. Here is what actually happens in practice.
We go at the baby's pace. There is no rigid schedule or shot list. I watched how Ava was responding, noticed when she needed a moment with Mum or Dad, and worked around her natural mood and energy. The best shots in this session came from moments of genuine interaction and not from posing.
You do not need elaborate outfits or props. Simple, coordinated clothing in neutral or soft colours works beautifully against a natural spring backdrop. For Ava, her parents chose a sweet layered outfit that kept her warm but looked lovely in the photos. I always suggest a spare layer in case of wind, and a backup outfit for babies is never a bad idea.
British weather is not a deal-breaker. Ava's session had a rain warning on the forecast. We went ahead anyway. In the end we had a few light drizzles and that was it but even if we had been caught in a proper shower, an umbrella becomes a wonderful prop and dancing in the rain makes for some of the most memorable and unique family images you could ever have. In several years of shooting outdoor sessions in the UK, weather has very rarely caused me to reschedule.
Sessions last around an hour. That is typically the sweet spot with babies at this age — long enough to settle in, get a variety of shots and locations, and capture some genuinely unguarded moments, but short enough that nobody (baby included) runs out of patience.
You get to enjoy the experience too. An hour in a beautiful garden with your baby and no phones, no to-do lists, just exploring together. One thing parents tell me after sessions like this is how much fun they had. :)

From the moment we found a patch of flowers, Ava was on a mission, reaching, patting petals, looking up at her parents with that wide-eyed wonder that only babies have. She was dressed perfectly for both the photos and the slightly chilly spring air, and it was clear from the start that she was a baby who wanted to be engaged and entertained. Her parents matched her energy brilliantly, and that playfulness made the whole session feel like a family outing that happened to have a camera along for the ride.
