Elegant 50th Birthday Party Photoshoot in London | Reading Event Photographer
Milestone birthdays like a 50th are such a beautiful reminder that photographs aren’t just about what happened, but how it felt.
For Rimmy'’s 50th birthday celebration in London, we had originally planned to start with natural daylight portraits around London Bridge, really showing off her personality in the city she loves. But London had other plans – the rain came down, the light disappeared, and all our outdoor ideas went out of the window. We headed straight to the restaurant instead. This is the reality of event photography, sometimes the plan changes, but the story can still be incredible.
There are two truths that sit together for me as an artist. The gallery I delivered is completely honest to the night itself – warm, intimate, full of real moments with friends that matter and family that supports and celebrates her with that “London after dark” atmosphere. At the same time, my creative brain is still gently grieving the version we had imagined: those airy, natural portraits on London Bridge that never happened. And that’s okay. Both can be true.
On the day, instead of worrying about what we couldn’t do, we chose to embrace what we did have. Out of respect for other guests in the restaurant, I had to avoid harsh on-camera flash and work with the warm, low light inside the restaurant. I looked for flattering pockets of light at the bar and in quieter corners, slipping in short portrait moments. The final gallery became a mix of party photos, details and intimate portraits that tell the full story of how it felt to be celebrated in this city that means so much to her.
This is how I approach my event photoshoots: a balance of relaxed portraits and honest, candid storytelling, with flexibility for whatever the day brings. Sometimes everything goes exactly to plan, and sometimes the weather rewrites the script – but either way, my goal is to create images that are true to your celebration. For her, that looks like a rich, warm, night-time story from the party, and soon, a separate daylight session in London to capture that other side of her personality we had originally planned.
